    Interesting. I see you’ve been doing your homework. I’ve tried to do a bit too and believe that cabbages were grown in England a couple of centuries before Guido was born, but green peas and beans were not yet introduced. Dried peas, beans and lentils were however and went into stews and pottage when in season. Also several different herbs.

    Yes, I remember being taught that Sir Walter Raleigh brought potatoes and tobacco back with him from North America. I don’t remember being taught about his execution though probably I just forgot. It was for treason and for once not at the Tower of London but at Old Palace Yard Westminster.
